What I Watched – July 2020

Man, I know I’m a little late with this one…sure, everyone is supposed to be super productive during this “quarantine” and just “getting shit done” while working from home. But some of us are still going into the office, trying to keep sane, working on new projects, trying not to turn into a recluse, trying to read as much as possible and become a better person while not being sucked into the black hole that is a Netflix binge. LOL. It’s OK to fall behind…take some time for yourself…step back, etc. But after my mini vacation out in El Paso to visit my sister, I have returned rejuvenated, refreshed and ready to go! Here’s to consistency!

So now that my little rant is over, back to the business at hand…what I watched last month…there’s the usual varied mix — old stuff, new stuff, rewatches, a couple of foreign films, a little TV and a documentary…you know, the usual LOL.

  • “The Kissing Booth 2” — man, that was worse than the first one (even though I saw some reviews that felt otherwise…to each their own I guess)
  • “Nothing to Hide” and “A Happy Event” — completely different, but both French films that I really enjoyed!
  • “Walter” — A quirky, indie about dealing with grief…I enjoyed it!
  • “Final Girl” — SMH
  • “Harlem Nights” — an absolute classic! If you haven’t seen it, get yo life!
  • “Acrimony” — Boy, that was bad SMH.
  • “Colette” — Girl power!

  • “Gremlins” — another classic…rewatching this one, its not really that good of a movie but it serves its purpose to entertain LOL.
  • “Last Christmas” — not very good…annoying characters
  • “Paris was a Woman” — interesting documentary about the women creatives who settled in Paris in the inter-war years. Quite illuminating. Highly recommend.
  • “The F**ck-It List” — fun YA film
  • “The Old Guard” — wasn’t sure what to expect, but this was damn good!
  • “Greyhound” — one note film, but entertaining…
  • “Life According to Sam” — man, never take life for granted…these kids show you that
  • “Midnight in Paris” — not a Woody Allen fan but this one sparked my interest in becoming an expat in France and renewed my interest in The Lost Generation…and influenced my current reading list…
  • “Bad Education” — this was good…stellar acting! Crazy real-life story…

  • “Winchester” — blah…expected a little better…on second thought, maybe I didn’t…
  • “Blondie of the Follies” — excruciating…don’t @ me, but I think Marion Davies is overrated…love Robert Montgomery though…
  • “Dinner at Eight” — another classic, classic…
  • “The Sun Is Also a Star” — two beautiful and vibrant young stars, but a lackluster film…
  • “Midway” — I love a good WWII film…but not this one…and Ed Skrein’s accent was painful…
  • “When Harry Met Sally…” — a rom com classic…
  • “Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich” — talk about a mediocre white man just sailing through life SMH…infuriating!

  • “Desperados” — just a “Girls Trip” + “Bridesmaids” mash-up knock-off…not good…
  • “Chernobyl” — this was just some damn good TV! Great acting and a powerful story…I know I was late to the game, but glad I finally got around to it! Man, HBO knows how to make a damn good show/series!

So that was last month…a little bit of this…little bit of that. Some laughs, some tears, some introspection. And per the usual, I used Letterboxd (follow me over there if you’d like) to keep track of what I watched. Oh, and just a FYI — going forward, there will be many more French films (I’m taking a more serious approach to my language learning and trying to immerse myself in French podcasts, movies, music, etc.) and works by underrepresented artists and voices so be prepared to broaden your horizons LOL!

What have you been watching recently???

Drop a line in the comments and let me know…and as usual, all suggestions/recommendations welcomed!
