Isle of Dogs (2018)

Don’t ask me to fetch that stick.

I kept putting off watching this one because I didn’t think I’d like it…but to my surprise, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Taking place in Japan (and paying homage to their cinematic style), this is the story of one boy’s odyssey to find his lost dog. From the opening shot, I was hooked…it was different, so it was cool. The stop-motion animation was interesting…the plot was “fresh-ish”…and the soundtrack was amazing and really propelled the story forward. And it was pretty fun trying to match all the voices (Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bob Balaban, Jeff Goldblum,  Bill Murray, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, Scarlett Johansson, Harvey Keitel, F. Murray Abraham, Tilda Swinton, Ken Watanabe, Fisher Stevens, Liev Schreiber, Courtney B. Vance and even Yoko Ono to name a few…or a lot lol) to their dogs. This one stayed true to writer-director Wes Anderson’s style with overhead shots, pastel palettes, center-framed shots, and tracking shots. Nominated for “Best Animated Feature” and “Best Original Score” at last year’s Oscars, if you’re looking for something different and fun to watch, this this one a look! Currently streaming on HBO Go.
