As AFI Fest 2020 calls it a wrap (there was some really good works screening…stay tuned for my wrap up), Indie Memphis Fest is in full swing for me (sucks that “Minari” is only screening at a drive-in so I miss it once again SMH)…
Word on the Street This Week…
- In tech news, new mobile streamer Quibi has called it a quit after only 7 months — that’s such a shame, I liked a couple of the shows on there…the shows had potential, maybe not the streamer itself…obviously LOL

- Niecy Nash is getting a daytime talk show over at CBS — not a big talkshow type of gal, but I wish her luck.
- “Flashdance” is getting a TV reboot over at Paramount+…I think this is the same streamer that was in talks for the “Grease” TV reboot…guess they’re getting all the old movie reboots
- Daisy Edgar-Jones (“Normal People”) has been cast in the “Where the Crawdads Sing” film adaptation…I loved “Normal People” so definitely interested in checking out more of her work…
- The “Don’t Breathe” sequel has been given a Summer 2021 release date…I surprisingly enjoyed the first one…if you haven’t seen it, check it out…
- Nia DaCosta‘s “Candyman” has gotten an August 2021 release date…

- A “Smokey and the Bandit” series has been given the green light…I guess this is the year of turning old ’70s & 80s movies into TV series…Shrug…
- Jamie Foxx is executive producing and starring in another Netflix film, “Day Shift,” an action-comedy with vampires…should be fun
- The “Ghostbusters” sequel has been moved to Summer 2021…I didn’t see the first one, was it any good?
- Netflix is gonna be campaigning for Chadwick Boseman as a Lead Actor Oscar contender for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”...
- If you know me well, you know that I love me some “Archer” so I’m super stoked that the show has been renewed for a 12th season over at FXX
- MGM has pushed “Legally Blonde 3” to 2022…you know how I feel about franchises (other than Marvel) who go past two LOL…do we really need this?!
- Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in a new limited series over at HBO “The Son”…
- Regina Hall (“Black Monday” “Scary Movie” “Girls’ Trip”) inks a first-look deal over at the Showtime, the same network of “Black Monday”…kudos to her!
- Kristen Stewart’s “Happiest Season” is set to debut on Hulu next month…
- Haley Lu Richardson (along with the filmmakers behind the “To All the Boys” franchise) is starring in and executive producing the feature adaptation of Jennifer E. Smith’s book “The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight”…
- Mindy Kaling‘s “Never Have I Ever” is set to start filming Season 2 next month — I enjoyed the first season so I’m looking forward to this next season…
- Spike Lee will receive the American Cinematheque Award during a virtual tribute on Jan. 14, 2021…
- Rosario Dawson is joining Hulu’s opioid crisis drama “Dopesick”
- Netflix has hired producer Fiona Lamptey as director of UK features #representationmatters behind the scenes too!
