Series Review: The Hook Up Plan a.k.a. Plan Coeur (2018 – )

Sidetone: I’m currently working on becoming conversational in French (I’ll pick up German next) so I’m watching a lot of foreign films so that my ears can get accustomed to the languages.

I am not afraid to admit that I am a hopeless romantic at heart and love a good Rom Com, and this French-language series was a great watch…it was a fun, Millennial love story. I loved the quirky cast of friends and the premise of the show…young Parisian Elsa is having a hard time moving on from her last boyfriend (even though it’s been 2 years since the break up) so her friends want to help her by paying for the series of a male escort, unbeknownst to her. They hire him to play the part of the “perfect guy” and hope that a “roll in the hay” will get Elsa out of her funk. What could go wrong, right?! Love (and deceit)…that’s what…it complicates everything!

Naive and somewhat typically lost Millennial Elsa with family and self-esteem issues is still trying to figure out her path in life. “Wild card” Charlotte is tired of being the flake of the group…”control freak” Emilie has to learn how to give up control sometimes and just live in the moment. Jules is the “Pretty Woman” (or man in this case lol) character…the “Pro” with a heart of gold who is always putting others first and now has to choose between the only life he’s known and the chance at real love.

I love how each of the friends has their own subplot and everyone on is their own personal journey of self-discovery and love…makes for a series that makes you watch to the very end. Zia Hanrot, Marc Ruchmann, Sabrina Ouazani, Josephine Drai, Syrus Shahidi, Guillaume Labbe and Yvan Naubron were all perfectly cast. There’s lots of charm and humor in this one…the characters are believe and the storyline realistic. (Tip: from what I’ve read, the dubbed version is pretty bad, so I’d do what I did and watch it with the subtitles…) The episodes are short making this one easy to binge watch. Overall, I highly recommend this cute little series and I can’t wait to see what Season 2 has in store. Currently streaming on Netflix.
